The Portuguese Historical Center is pleased to announce the award of three (3) academic scholarships in 2020.  The Scholarship Fund is supported by the generous donations from the Captain John Gomes Rebelo Memorial Scholarship Fund and Manuel G. Balelo & Norine Marroquin Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Portuguese Historical Center (PHC) was founded in 1977 to encourage civic and community involvement in the preservation of Portuguese culture, folklore, and history by:

  • Supporting Portuguese Language preservation
  • Hosting continuing education and community events
  • Preserving artifacts from the Gann photo collection, Tuna Hall of Progress, and others
  • Honoring and maintaining the Tunaman’s Memorial on Shelter Island
  • Honoring our outstanding community leaders and organizations with ongoing displays and presentations
  • Archiving the many accomplishments of the Portuguese organizations, both locally and worldwide

Tuna Fishing Industry Monument

We have broken ground on our Tuna Fishing Industry Monument!  Please come and see how beautiful it is!  If you are interested in honoring those that gave, and are still giving, their livelihood to the tuna fishing industry please see the application for criteria and questionnaire.

A selected number of names will be available to purchase for inscribing as well as floor pavers. A criteria is required as well as a history questionnaire form to qualify. Please see application for criteria and questionnaire.
